Olyns Recycling Cubes Powered by Wovenmedia at the Super Bowl

Olyns is rethinking recycling with their Olyns Cubes, the eye-catching bottle collection/recycling machines that were featured in Pepsi’s Trash Talk activation that ran during Super Bowl LVI.

The Cubes attracted 150 users per hour, with over 8,000 container deposits during the event, with a video experience powered by Wovenmedia’s Content Management System which performed flawlessly throughout.

Olyns Recycling Cubes Powered by Wovenmedia at the Super Bowl - Case Study

Company

Olyns was created to change the world, one empty container at a time. On learning that 86% of plastic will never be recycled, they began an endeavor to fix the broken system and reduce plastic waste. Their tech-centric out-of-home reverse vending machines (RVM’s) are helping to meet the demand for recycled PET plastic (RPET) and accelerate the shift to a circular plastics economy.

The Olyns Cube is a uniquely engineered bottle collection RVM designed for high-traffic, indoor locations. The recycling platform uses AI and a gamified mobile app to reward customers for recycling and to keep track of the positive environmental impact at both the individual and community level.

Each Cube boasts a 65-inch full-motion HD video screen with advertising capabilities for partners looking to align themselves with a sustainable retail media network.

Goals

The main goal was to showcase this new technology-centered approach to recycling in a place that would reach thousands of visitors and potential users over a short period of time. Two Olyns recycling Cubes were featured in Pepsi’s Super Bowl “Trash Talk” activation.

To manage the recycling Cubes’ screens, Olyns needed a commercially robust and feature-rich cloud-based Content Management System that could manage triggered playback of different messages when consumers deposited their bottles into the Cubes.

“Our solution calls for a CMS that can adapt to our needs and scale to thousands of screens while being easy to use. The WovenManager Content Management System ticks all these boxes while being surprisingly cost-competitive.”

Wovenmedia Solution

For Super Bowl LVI, Olyns wanted a highly interactive experience for the attendees. The event was a big opportunity for visitors to see the RVM Cubes in action and to learn more about this scalable recycling model.

Each deposit from the attendees triggered one of 40 response videos either congratulating the user for recycling bottles and cans correctly or sharing a “Trash-Talk” video for trying to deposit non-recyclable materials into the machine.

Triggering the right messages in the CMS

From consultation to ongoing monitoring and support, Wovenmedia’s team was in charge of reviewing Olyns’ unique requirements and successfully implementing and managing their digital signage solution.

How does it work? The computer controlling Olyns recycling Cubes creates an electrical signal (trigger) linked to the GPIO connectors on BrightSign media players. To make sure the appropriate video responses play depending on the deposit type, Wovenmedia’s engineering team configured the triggers in WovenManager (CMS) based on the type of signal received.

Wovenmedia solutions are flexible and enable a completely turnkey way to bring the power of video to your customers. “The WovenManager platform is a cloud-native solution built from the ground up to meet the needs of digital media companies such as ours,” says Philip. “The ease of configuration was something that set them apart from the field.”

Results

The Olyns recycling Cubes were the centerpiece of Pepsi’s Trash Talk activation, attracting about 150 users per hour.

Visitors had fun, learned about the difference between trash and recycling with the interesting messages triggered by the deposits, and won prizes along the way. “We achieved over 8,000 activations during the event, with the Wovenmedia solutions performing flawlessly throughout,” says Philip.

Looking to the future

People want to recycle, and they are excited to find new ways to do so. That’s why Olyns’ plan for the future is to expand across the United States.

Recycling Cubes with personalized messages on their screens and a gamified mobile app offer a new approach to recycling. They not only provide consumers with convenience and incentives but also give store locations new revenue and data-driven customer insights. Brand advertisers can communicate and build a strong connection to consumers with Olyns’ precisely targeted retail media channel. And, most importantly, the environment gains a scalable recycling model that can redirect millions of tons of plastic, glass, and aluminum from landfills and oceans into new products.

“Thanks to the support the Wovenmedia team gave Olyns we were able to exceed our stakeholders’ expectations with an interactive media experience,” says Philip.
